‘Orakzai should give word for no more strikes’

KHAR: Malik Abdul Aziz, head of a jirga negotiating peace with the government in Bajaur Agency, has sought NWFP Governor Ali Mohammad Jan Orakzai’s “concrete assurances” against another strike for peace talks to continue. Aziz told Daily Times that the recent attack on the seminary had “spoiled” efforts for a peace deal in line with the North Wazirisatn accord. Aziz said that according to his assessment, the strike was “carried out from across the border”. “The US wants to sabotage the peace efforts by killing innocent children,” he said. “It is therefore very important that the government gives its word to prevent any more such incidents, before the tribe agrees to resume peace efforts.” He said the government did not contact any jirga member after the raid, and “the condition will be put before the authorities whenever they contact us”. staff report
